Resident backs Hopkins Park candidate; state representative urges council to address marina parking

Theresa Melhot, a resident of 2924 Cobre Circle, addressed the St. Cloud City Council during the citizen forum to urge support for Shania Shelton for the education program supervisor role at Hopkins Park. Melhot said she has observed Shelton’s work for more than a decade and called her the "only choice" for the position.
Melhot read a letter she said she had emailed to council and staff. "I'm writing you today to voice my support for Shania Shelton for the position of education program supervisor position at Hopkins Park," she said.
Council members responded that hiring is managed by the city manager and human resources. The presiding official said emails would be forwarded to parks and recreation and HR and placed in the applicant's file; council members noted they could not direct hiring decisions.
Separately, Representative Paul Stark told the council he had raised a separate issue about evening parking at the marina that could affect riverboat operations. "We need to address our parking issue at our marina during the evening hours when we're trying to make our riverboat success," Stark said, and noted the topic is expected on a February agenda. He said he would be in Tallahassee in February and wanted the concern on the record.
The council did not take action on either matter during the meeting; staff and the city manager were identified as responsible for follow-up on hiring and facility parking concerns.
