Scott Mixon, Duke Energy government and community relations manager for North Florida, told the City of Perry council on Jan. 13 that Duke Energy is awarding a total of $25,000 to the Perry area: $15,000 to the City of Perry for supplies and sewer infrastructure and $10,000 to the local Chamber of Commerce for small‑business mini‑grants for signage, parking and equipment.
Mixon also updated the council on customer bills: he said Duke Energy now expects to recover storm‑related costs ahead of schedule, moving an expected rate decrease forward to the end of the month. "Based on our current estimates, Duke Energy expects to recover the full amount of all 3 storms ahead of schedule, moving that rate decrease not to March, but to the end of this month," he said, adding the reduction would be followed by an additional seasonal $11 decrease in March for a total of about $44 in lower bills over the two adjustments.
Mixon described Duke Energy’s America250 grant initiative that will offer small awards (roughly $200–$5,000) for nonprofits with projects tied to veterans, green spaces or storytelling about local history and encouraged eligible groups to apply.
Council response: the council received the announcement and posed no substantive objections; council members participated in a photo to mark the award presentation.
Next steps: Staff will coordinate with Duke Energy and the Chamber regarding the use and distribution of the awarded funds and incorporate the city grant into the budget amendment adopted by the council.
