Marshall Council approves replacement of citywide data storage array

The Marshall City Council voted to approve purchase and installation of a replacement storage area network (SAN) array intended to serve as the city’s central data storage.
Steven Anderson, city clerk, told the council the existing array "is the main central data storage for pretty much all the city," and said it may be at or beyond its useful life, creating a risk of hard-drive failures and slower system performance. Anderson recommended using a local IT vendor’s quote rather than the state-contract option, noting the vendor’s price was slightly lower for equipment-only but did not include data migration and installation.
Council members asked about physical location and data security. Anderson said the primary array is located at SMSU and declined to disclose detailed server locations for security reasons. The council then moved to approve the purchase and installation; the motion passed.
The vote authorizes staff to proceed with the purchase and coordinate installation and data transfer work. City officials indicated they expect to complete the changeover within about a month to reduce the risk of service interruptions.
Next steps: staff will finalize procurement and schedule installation and data migration with the selected vendor.
