The Board of Education approved several capital actions during the Dec. 3 meeting, including awarding a contract for replacement of an interior folding wall at Sudlersville Elementary and approving internal transfers among FY26 capital projects.
Darryl Bariclow, supervisor of facilities and design, said a recent site investigation and quotes indicated the cost to replace the folding wall — which separates the gym and cafeteria and measures about 68 feet wide by 24 feet tall — is approximately $215,000. The district proposed to piggyback on a Montgomery County Public Schools bid and recommended awarding the contract to Modern Door and Equipment Sales of White Plains, Maryland. The board moved, seconded and approved the contract award by voice vote; the district said FY26 county CIP funds will be used.
Bariclow also outlined a requested internal transfer of $96,000 from the Bayside Elementary storefront project to increase the Sudlersville project budget from $120,000 to $216,000, explaining the Bayside bids came in under estimated cost and existing funds were available. Separately, the board approved withdrawing $22,000 of prior state reimbursement from the capital fund balance to increase FY26 security hardware upgrade funding from $500,000 to $522,000.
Board members discussed price changes since 2012 (a comparable wall replacement at about $61,000 in 2012) and confirmed Modern Door is among the few suppliers for large folding walls on the East Coast. The board approved the motions by voice vote.
