At the Jan. 5 council meeting, Dr. Chris Richey, director of administration, updated the council on multiple administrative items. He said the procurement office has received proposals for a bus shelter placemaking grant funded by the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development, that artist interviews begin tomorrow, and the project is targeted for completion in May.
Richey also reported that the applicant withdrew conditional review applications (Board of Appeals files 556/557) for a proposed gas station and hotel adjacent to Bully Rock Parkway and Level Road; as a result, the public hearing scheduled for Jan. 8 was canceled.
The mayor announced the city received notice Dec. 22 that it was awarded a Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) of $156,366 to renovate sidewalks and install ADA ramps in the Somerset Manor neighborhood. The mayor thanked city staff (Dr. Richey, Public Works director Joe Conway and grant writer Wanda Booker) for their work on the application.
Bridget Johnson, director of economic development and tourism, said the tourism office will lead the Mardi Gras parade on Feb. 17 and introduced Alyssa Mohafi as the new chief of Main Street and brand marketing. Director of Finance Mr. Abdi provided fund‑balance updates for the General Fund, Water & Sewer Fund and Marina Fund.
Council received the updates; the Board of Appeals hearing was canceled due to applicant withdrawal and the CDBG funding will be used for Somerset Manor sidewalk improvements.
