Commissioners vote to offer certain tax-delinquent homes to cities for $1
Summary
Facing low auction interest and expensive tear-down costs, the board moved to offer a set of tax-delinquent properties to the cities where they are located for nominal ($1) transfers so municipalities can manage demolition or reuse.
The board reviewed the county’s inventory of tax-delinquent residential properties, heard site conditions and auction results, and voted to offer properties to the cities in which the parcels are located for $1 each.
Commissioners said several of the houses had received no bids at recent auctions and described specific properties that are effectively uninhabitable or an eyesore. One commissioner argued that offering properties to cities for $1 would allow municipalities to negotiate with local buyers, manage demolition, or otherwise resolve public-safety and blight concerns without the county incurring demolition expense.
A motion to offer the properties for $1 to the respective cities carried by unanimous vote. The board instructed staff to execute the offers and to return any properties declined by cities to the county process for further action.
The board also discussed the alternative of lowering opening auction prices or re-auctioning properties, and asked staff to coordinate with city officials on potential handoffs before demolitions or transfers occur.
