County told to update landfill reporting; engineer testing and budget line may be required

During unfinished business on Jan. 7, county officials told the Board of Commissioners they had received a state notice that the county’s landfill/solid‑waste annual report was delinquent. Staff said the only report filed since 1994 was a recent 2020 submission and that the state expects an updated report by Feb. 12.
Paul (speaker) said the state suggested contracting an engineer to perform testing and that the county may need to add a line item to the budget to pay for drilling or testing to document pit volumes, waste types, potential hazardous materials, and gases generated. Staff said they will begin researching historical records and seek engineering options to meet the state’s deadline.
Commissioners flagged the scope of work and the prospect of tracking 31 years of files; staff said they will place the item on next week’s agenda with follow‑up documentation and potential budget requests.
No formal enforcement action was reported during the meeting; the county framed the work as an immediate compliance task requiring technical verification and possible contract services.
