The Granville County Board of Education chair apologized for inappropriate language and procedural lapses at a December meeting and said the board has reaffirmed expectations around decorum; the board also announced committee assignments for the year.
The Granville County Board of Education opened its Jan. 6 meeting with an apology from the chair for the tone and language used at the board’s December meeting, and a pledge to reinforce conduct rules going forward.
"I want to speak openly and sincerely with our community about the recent school board meeting and the concerns raised regarding the use of improper, inappropriate language and the tone of the meeting," the chair said, adding, "For that, I am truly sorry." The chair acknowledged a delay in invoking Robert's Rules of Order during the earlier meeting and said responsibility rests with the chair.
Board members said the district has taken steps to reduce procedural confusion and improve meeting technology. Superintendent Dr. Winborn told the board the livestream and recordings are functioning and noted the district is migrating agenda materials from a previous vendor to a new platform to improve public access.
The chair also announced committee assignments for the year. Policy Committee will be chaired by Miss Waters; Academic Committee by Miss Anderson; Legislative by Miss Hayes; Finance by Miss LeBreque; Operations by Miss Russell; and the HR Innovation Committee by Dr. Lindsey. Miss Anderson will represent the district on the Granville Education Foundation Committee, and Miss Russell will represent the board on the Teacher of the Year committee.
Board leaders framed the remarks as an effort to restore community trust and to emphasize respect and professional conduct during public meetings. The board then moved on to scheduled reports, public comment and the rest of its agenda.
