Lake County commissioners adopt radon proclamation, two CUPs and administrative resolutions

Public health: Alana Maderos, public health deputy director, requested a proclamation recognizing January as National Radon Action Month to raise community awareness of radon risk and free radon test availability. Maderos said radon is the leading cause of lung cancer among nonsmokers and that more than half of homes in Lake County have radon levels at or above the actionable threshold. The board voted to approve the proclamation by voice vote.
Land use approvals: The board approved a conditional use permit for Sugarloaf Mountain Ranch (land use file referenced by staff) after the Planning Commission’s favorable recommendation. Staff emphasized the proposal supports Colorado State Forest Service forest‑health and fire‑mitigation efforts; conditions include adherence to Lake County Fire Rescue recommendations and other planning conditions.
The board also approved a CUP for two backcountry structures known as Rose Hut and Peggy’s Bunkhouse (file 25‑42) with conditions. The Planning Commission had reduced proposed occupancy from 16 to 12 for wildlife and infrastructure reasons, and staff added two conditions that the board included: (1) the existing on‑site well must be made operational solely for fire suppression in accordance with Lake County Fire Rescue standards prior to occupancy of the Rose Hut, and (2) Peggy’s Bunkhouse must have an approved septic‑system variance prior to occupancy.
Administrative resolutions: The board adopted resolution 20‑26‑01 to set regular meeting dates (the second and third Tuesdays of each month at 11 a.m., unless otherwise scheduled) and designate official posting locations (primary: lakecountyco.gov; secondary: front window of the Lake County Courthouse). The board also adopted resolution 20‑26‑02 establishing uniform administrative business hours (Monday–Friday, 8 a.m.–5 p.m.) with provisions for posted lunch hours and staffing exceptions as described in the resolution.
Consent agenda: The board approved the consent agenda for Jan. 6, 2026, and concluded the meeting.
What this means: The radon proclamation signals county outreach (free test kits and low‑income mitigation information).
