Commission hears public comments, marks retirements and welcomes Walsenburg city administrator

At its Dec. 16 meeting the Huerfano County Board of County Commissioners heard public comments that highlighted personnel changes and community updates.
Stacy Corey, a staff member at Lathrop State Park, told commissioners the park is in “winter mode,” reported there were no aquatic nuisance species in the lakes this season and introduced her successor, Daryl Cedar. Corey said she will retire in nine working days and thanked county staff for their years of support. “I have really enjoyed working with you all,” Corey said.
Jerry Pacheco introduced himself as the newly appointed city administrator for the city of Walsenburg and summarized his municipal governance background, saying he plans to move into the city by June. “I think Walsenburg has tremendous potential,” Pacheco said, and expressed his intent to work with county leadership on shared priorities.
Diane Lyons offered a short public comment noting the second day of Hanukkah, called for peace and respect in the community and referenced a recent tragedy overseas.
The board also acknowledged a longtime county employee (referred to in the meeting transcript as Verna/Myra) for 40 years of service and signaled no objections to a Luminess Cemetery District request to reappoint Gary Bailey to a six‑year term; the clerk said the item will be placed on a future agenda. The commissioners closed public comment and continued with the regular meeting agenda.
