County accepts donated former hospital site; EPA grant cleanup planned

Huerfano County commissioners agreed to accept a donation of a former hospital site from Pueblo West Home Leasing and to move title work through the county’s title company to obtain a special warranty deed if no liens exist.
Staff said the property burned years ago and that cleanup would be pursued using EPA grant funding, not county funds. Economic development will run a community process, paid through grant funds, to determine the highest and best reuse of the cleared site. During public comment, resident Ryan Gies asked whether the county intended to sell the cleaned property back to the city of Walsenburg or to a private developer; staff responded that the city’s role would be regulatory and that the county’s role is to remove hazardous materials and support reuse planning.
A motion to approve the donation agreement was moved, seconded and passed by the board.
