Huerfano County moves toward new emergency communications platform after cyberattack on alert vendor

County emergency management reported Dec. 9 that a recent cyberattack on the county’s alert/notification vendor disrupted emergency messaging capabilities and prompted the agency to recommend switching to a Motorola platform that integrates with existing Motorola systems and could be implemented quickly.
Staff told commissioners the recommended one-time implementation cost is $15,820 with an estimated annual subscription of roughly $7,820. The change would reduce reliance on the compromised platform and provide a migration path ahead of the county’s 2026 contract decisions. "We're gonna... move over to Motorola, which integrates with existing Motorola systems, provides enhanced features, and saves nearly $2,000 annually," an unidentified staff member said. The board moved to approve the upfront implementation cost and the motion passed.
Staff also noted Motorola can assist with implementation (Zapier integration) to restore transmission capabilities while the county delays payment to the existing vendor for 2026. The board approved the expenditure to get a new system in place as soon as possible.
