Huerfano County commissioners introduced Ordinance 2025-03 on Dec. 9, a measure intended to create a new article in chapter 14 of the county code to govern the introduction, support and facilitation of nonnative species and biological control agents.
County staff said the draft adds protective steps after recommendations from the county’s noxious weeds advisory group. "First is that biological control agents have to be approved, licensed in Colorado by the Colorado Department of Agriculture," an unidentified staff member told the board. The ordinance also requires the county’s list of approved agents be vetted by the advisory group or the board of commissioners.
Commissioner discussion was limited; one commissioner moved to introduce the ordinance and another seconded the motion. The board voted to introduce the measure, advancing it from initial presentation to the formal ordinance process. The transcript records the motion passing without further amendment.
The ordinance is now in its introduction stage and will return to the board for subsequent readings and potential adoption. The county did not provide a projected timetable for final action during the meeting.
