Commission approves Hendersonville concept plan to apply for $3.5 million in parks grants

Parks Director Andy Guillory told commissioners the city expects to request about $3,500,000 in the current round and outlined a range of projects: replacement of the concession stand at the main quad at Drake Street Park, repaving at Drakes Creek Park and Veterans Park, an inclusive playground at Sanders Ferry Park, turf and ball-field infield work, a boat dock and ramp replacement at Mallard Point, and a parks master-plan update.
Guillory emphasized the city’s success in securing these competitive grants and credited local and gubernatorial support. He noted the inclusive-playground budget planned at roughly $750,000 in 2025 (contrasted with Mary’s Magical Place, which cost $1.6 million in 2018) and clarified that the planned inclusive playgrounds on this list will be smaller in scale than Mary’s Magical Place but still accessible for wheelchairs and visitors with sensory needs.
Commissioners asked targeted questions about specific sites including parking and floodplain constraints at Drakes Creek and rugby-field parking; Guillory said some items (for example, certain paving or concession-stand material choices) might come back for further material approval but that the concept plan itself needed the commission’s blessing for the grant application. The commission approved the concept plan by electronic vote (recorded as 8 yeses). The grant application process will continue with staff-led project development and potential follow-up approvals for site-specific construction documents.
