Superintendent highlights security grant, perfect 10th-grade writing results; board approves literacy-plan tweaks

The Patrick County School Board heard the superintendent's report on Feb. 13, which included the division's receipt of a school security equipment grant, an update on assessment and accreditation status and minor amendments to the division literacy plan that the board approved without substantive debate.
Speaker 3 reported that the division "was awarded the school security equipment grant," noting the funds will be used to buy additional radios that interface with intercoms, install perimeter fencing at three schools and supply portable AEDs for field trips.
On assessments, Speaker 3 said preliminary tenth-grade writing results showed strong performance: "we had a 100% pass rate for the fall," and added the division is awaiting official accreditation reports from the state before moving forward with performance incentive payouts to staff.
For literacy, the chair recognized Dr. Wood and asked Miss Cassidy to present updates to the division literacy plan. Miss Cassidy described the changes as limited and administrative: adding a chart of planned training for the 2026'27 school year (section 3) and separating pre-K'through'2 and fourth'through'8 vowel instruction charts in section 4 to keep the online plan current. After a brief opportunity for questions, the board approved the updates by voice vote.
Other superintendent notes included calendar reminders for Thanksgiving and winter breaks, substitute-teacher training and recent student extracurricular accomplishments.
