OHA staff detail plans to revive Ajo Opio youth leadership program; applications to open January 2026

Office of Hawaiian Affairs staff updated trustees on plans to revive the Ajo Opio leadership program and outlined a timeline that calls for applications to open in January 2026.

Program staff reported that alumni survey results showed strong interest in reengaging: roughly 81% of responding alumni indicated they would like to reconnect with the program. Presenters said the program’s curriculum will emphasize cultural depth and civic leadership skills (drafting, public speaking, negotiation) and will include pre- and post-program activities, alumni mentorship and legacy documentation.

The presenter described consultation with internal PAIA teams, previous program staff and alumni to inform outreach and curriculum design. Staff said they plan to collaborate with potential partners, including a House sponsor and cultural or institutional partners such as the judiciary history center, and they are discussing a memorandum of understanding for capital partnerships with a target to sign by February. Trustees were invited to participate in outreach and alumni events.

Administration said it will publish the application solicitation in January and expects program activities to begin after selections are made. Trustees asked that alumni and longstanding program participants be invited to legacy events and recommended including archival materials and alumni stories as part of program documentation.

Staff said they will continue refining the schedule and budget and will follow up with details for trustees as the solicitation is released.
