District 70 to run student smartphone survey under $50,000 state grant with opt-out policy

District staff told the board Aug. 5 that a $50,000 grant from the Colorado Department of Law will fund a smartphone-awareness campaign, including a student survey for grades 3–8 that must be completed before mid-September.
Mr. Pitre explained that the grant dictated the survey content and that staff will use an opt-out policy consistent with other district surveys. He presented the draft form and said the survey is brief (four questions) and will come back to the board at the next meeting for additional feedback. The district will distribute the survey in keeping with the grant timeline and reported requirements.
Mr. Pitre emphasized that the district did not craft the questions—those were required by the grant—and that families will have an opportunity to opt out. The presentation included a timeline for administration and a promise to return to the board with any requested changes.
