The Cape Coral Youth Council voted on Jan. 9 to submit its senior project — a mental-health survey of students — for the Youth Council Excellence Awards. Member Johnson, who is leading the senior project, updated the group that the survey had "about 15 responses" in the first hour and was at 24 responses with a week left to collect data to present to school officials.
Council members agreed the mental-health project had broad community relevance and could strengthen an awards submission by demonstrating measurable impact. Member Paragonda suggested emphasizing the survey's future reach. The council voted to make the senior mental-health project the award submission and then assigned Members Johnson and Halsey to draft the required 750-word essay; the first draft was set for Dec. 29 with a final draft before the February meeting.
Advisers cautioned that the district must review survey questions before distribution to additional schools, which creates a narrow timeline; Member Johnson said she had emailed school staff and planned to ask for announcements and posting to social media to increase participation. The council also approved a recommendation letter request to Councilwoman Nelson Lastra to accompany the award submission.
