Council appoints Miriam McGilvery to Planning Commission through April 2026 amid procedural debate

The Arvada City Council appointed Miriam McGilvery to the Planning Commission on Dec. 16 to fill an unexpired term through April 30, 2026.
Mayor Pro Tem Randy Mormon moved to appoint McGilvery after staff confirmed she had been through the prior application and interview cycle and had indicated continued interest. Council member Michael Griffith said he would have preferred reopening the application process so newly seated council members could participate, stating, "I would very much prefer that we did an open process and put this back out for applications," but said he respected colleagues’ earlier decisions. Council member Shawn Ambrose and others said not appointing someone would hamper the commission’s ability to achieve quorum and hear cases, creating delays for applicants.
On a recorded vote the motion carried 5–1, with Griffith voting no and Council member Bob Pfeiffer excused. Staff told council the appointment will be effective until April, when the former planning commission member’s term expires and additional vacancies will be available for application.
Council members thanked staff and encouraged broader future outreach for applicants to boards and commissions.
