Sanford schedules Goldsboro water-main upsizing; work to begin Jan. 26

Brett Johnson, Sanford’s public works and utilities director, announced a water-main improvement in the Goldsboro neighborhood that will begin contractor mobilization on Jan. 12 and move into main construction on Jan. 26. Johnson said the upsizing project — on Mulberry between historic Goldsboro and 10th Street and on 11th Street east of Mulberry — is planned as a four-month effort that should be finished by June 2026. "What you can expect from that is some detours and some lane closures," Johnson said, adding that the city does not expect full road closures.

Johnson also reported that the downtown 2nd Street project is about 50% complete and has encountered some unforeseen conditions on one segment but remains largely on schedule. The Goldsboro project is described as a water-main upsizing to improve infrastructure capacity in the historic neighborhood.

Residents who travel those corridors should anticipate lane shifts and short detours while work proceeds; Johnson encouraged patience and said the city will provide updates as the contractor mobilizes. No budget figures, contractor name or permit citations were provided in the meeting record.

The announcement came during a regular community meeting where staff also reviewed holiday programming and public-safety staffing. The next procedural step for the project is contractor mobilization beginning Jan. 12, followed by construction activity starting Jan. 26.
