'Kids First' update: district to extend curriculum adoptions and continue coaching supports

At the Jan. 12 meeting, Hailey delivered an update on the Kids First instructional support program and related curriculum decisions.

Hailey said the program will move to a monthly contract structure so incoming leaders can more easily continue the work. The district will maintain K–5 math coaching (a coach in K–5 two days a week) and provide ELA supports for 6–12, funded in part by an HQIM grant of $90,000 per year. Hailey said the supports will focus on RTI planning and collaborative teacher coaching, with coaches also available on early-release days.

Regarding textbooks, Hailey told the board the district will extend current science and ELA materials for three additional years rather than pushing a new adoption, citing limited internal capacity to support a change during administrative transition. She said the district budgeted for the k–8 ELA extension and will be available to advise the incoming superintendent.

Board members asked clarifying questions about the timeline for coaches and textbook funding and thanked Hailey and other staff for arranging supports while leadership changes take place.
