The Socorro Independent School District board of trustees approved a proclamation declaring Feb. 2–6, 2026, National School Counselor Week after a presentation from the district’s director of school counseling.
Alma Barrios, director of school counseling, asked the board to adopt the proclamation and introduced three students who read the text describing counselors’ roles in helping students reach their potential. Barrios told trustees the American School Counselor Association annually honors counselors “for their dedication to students and their communities.”
The proclamation enumerated counselors’ duties, stating they help students explore abilities and career awareness, work with parents to support educational and social growth, and coordinate with teachers and community resources to advance comprehensive counseling programs. Administration asked for board approval after the reading.
A motion to approve the proclamation was made (identified in the transcript as Miss Gardeia) and seconded (Missus Macias); a voice vote recorded at least one “Aye,” and the chair declared the item passed. The board did not record a named roll-call tally in the transcript. The proclamation covers Feb. 2–6, 2026, as National School Counselor Week.
The board immediately moved on to recognition items after the vote and adjourned the meeting at 6:08 p.m.
