West Haven council approves $3.1M school roof, animal‑shelter donations and a slate of appointments

The West Haven City Council on Jan. 12, 2026 approved a package of routine actions, including a $3,104,541 resolution to fund the Savin Rock Community School roof replacement, acceptance of animal shelter donations totaling $38,148.10 and several mayoral appointments and reappointments to local boards and advisory panels.

The education committee presented a resolution authorizing the appropriation and expenditure of 100% of project costs for the Savin Rock roof replacement so the project may proceed with the state’s construction funding process. Mayor Dorinda Borer said the funds are already in the capital plan and the resolution enables the state grant and construction process. The committee recommended approval; the full council voted and the motion carried.

The finance committee reported animal shelter donations from multiple donors totaling $38,148.10, including a $37,628.90 gift from Bailey and Herschman, P.C. The council voted to accept the donations and deposit them into the designated line for shelter donations.

The council considered and approved a lengthy list of appointments and reappointments across boards and commissions (Citizens Advisory Committee, Energy Commission alternates, Inland Wetlands alternates, Board of Health, Zoning Board of Appeals and others). Some items were held in committee for further review; others were moved out favorably by the personnel and civil service committee and approved by the full council.

Votes on the consent‑style items were recorded during committee reports and by roll call; committee chairs noted unanimous or majority support and the council carried the motions. Council members praised community volunteers, noted recent police promotions and heard a mayoral update about beach work, an upcoming concert funded by ARPA and a pending charter revision process.

The council adjourned after routine new business and liaison reports.
