The CUSD 200 Board of Education met Jan. 14 at Pleasant Hill Elementary, where newly introduced principal Hugh Bauger highlighted school programs, community partnerships and student engagement practices.
In his remarks, Bauger (introduced by Superintendent Dr. Schuler) described the building-wide Mustang Bucks system that rewards respectful, responsible and kind behavior, a school improvement focus on math manipulatives and visual models, and a transformed Learning Library Commons led by LLC Director Betsy Prang that supports teamwork, problem solving and creativity. He thanked staff, PTA volunteers and specific staff members for their support during his transition into the role.
"Students are learning that their choices matter, that community effort is powerful, and that accountability and joy can coexist," Bauger told the board, describing assemblies and classroom practices designed to build belonging.
The board heard about several student-centered initiatives: a fifth-grade Mustang leaders program, a Kindness Club with a student-designed gratitude wall, multilingual supports integrated into the day, and the "One School, One Book" family reading program with materials in English, Spanish and audio formats.
The board recognized Emily Marvin, a long-time substitute and PTA volunteer who now serves as a special education paraprofessional at the school, for her sustained service to students and families. The meeting also included a short performance by the Pleasant Hill choir, directed by Mr. Santoya.
Student ambassadors from Wheaton North and Wheaton South gave updates on academic and extracurricular activities — including DECA, Model UN, theater festivals, athletics and a student-driven bathroom renovation project — showing districtwide student engagement that administration highlighted earlier in the superintendent's report.
The board then proceeded with routine consent business and district agenda items. No policy or budget change affecting Pleasant Hill programs was enacted at the meeting.
