Public speaker urges Twinsburg to unpause high-school hockey, calls for support for girls' hockey
Summary
A community member urged the board to restore Twinsburg High School’s hockey program, proposed a district-supported summer learn‑to‑play program for grades 7–12, and urged the board to support expansion of girls' hockey in the region, citing local players' success including Leila Edwards.
During public comment at the Jan. 7 meeting, Lindsay Gavin urged the Twinsburg Board of Education to take steps to restore and support high-school hockey programs.
Gavin asked the district not to let a one-year pause become a permanent cancellation and proposed a professionally run, fee-sharing summer learn‑to‑play program for students in grades 7–12 to rebuild participation. "Please do not let this pause turn into a full cancellation of the sport," Gavin said.
She also urged the district and regional partners to support girls' hockey opportunities, describing the safety and inclusion benefits of all-girls teams and highlighting local players who have achieved national recognition. Gavin noted Leila Edwards — described as a two-time NCAA champion and a Team USA selection — as an example of regional talent and called for local stakeholders to help grow girls' hockey in the Cleveland suburbs.
Board members thanked the speaker and said staff would follow up with the athletic department; no formal action was taken during the meeting on the hockey requests.
