Students, clubs and CTE grants highlighted at Culpeper County School Board meeting

At the Jan. 12 Culpeper County School Board meeting, student presenters and coaches highlighted extracurricular programs and individual achievements.
Luke Jury, a senior at Eastern View High School and three‑year member of the Superintendent Student Advisory Group (SSAG), told the board SSAG has addressed chronic absenteeism, cell‑phone management (including Yondr pouches), increased student engagement and supports for the final semester. "SSAG gave me and my fellow SSAG members a platform to speak on real school issues with a board with people who are gonna listen and get stuff done," Jury said.
Mister Birch presented Sycamore Park’s before‑ and after‑school offerings, which he said have engaged more than 100 students this year through clubs funded by a PATH Wellness grant, and previewed two new clubs (coding and Panther Press for fifth‑grade yearbook work). The Sycamore Park choir performed for the board, and members praised music teacher Ashley Weaver.
Kathy Uribe, varsity field hockey coach at Culpeper County High School, recognized Riley Edwards for athletic honors, noting Edwards’s recorded stats, All‑State selection and a 4.3 GPA while participating in a dual‑enrollment program. Coach Mason Sherry recognized football player Caleb Green for near‑record all‑purpose yards, leadership on and off the field, and academic performance.
Board members used their comments to congratulate students and staff, thanked PATH for the grant that supports after‑school activities, and noted the value of such programs for student engagement and retention.
