The Appointments Committee of the Portland Public Schools board unanimously approved a three-person ad hoc committee Dec. 23 to scope and manage the request-for-proposals process to hire a firm to lead the district's equity investigation. "The purpose of today's meeting is to appoint 3 board members to the ad hoc committee...that will be in charge of scoping, and managing the RFP or selection process," Chair Sarah Lentz said.
The committee voted to nominate Mickey Bondo, Sarah Bryden, and Fatuma Noor as the ad hoc panel. Lentz moved the slate: "Our candidates that we would like to put forward are Mickey Bondo, Sarah Bryden, and Fatuma Noor as the ad hoc committee," and the motion received a second from Board Member Opperman. Members present voiced agreement and Lentz declared the slate unanimous.
Board members discussed availability and time commitments before finalizing the appointments. Julianne offered that Member Bryden had relevant legal expertise and drafting experience that would aid work on an RFP; she also volunteered to serve in Bryden's place if needed. Board members noted the committee's work could be time-consuming and said they would confirm members' availability in January if necessary.
Lentz said the ad hoc committee was created under a board resolution from the previous meeting and that a full board vote likely was not required to seat the committee given the resolution's language. She added the committee hopes to begin scoping the RFP before the end of the year and said she would reconvene the group after the Christmas holiday if the slate could not be finalized. "We'll let the board know at the next meeting," Lentz said.
The committee also identified alternates—Opperman and board member Alina—if any of the three named members cannot serve. The appointments committee adjourned following the vote.
Next steps: staff and the named members will confirm availability and the ad hoc committee is expected to begin work on the RFP scoping once its membership is finalized.
