Councilor McDonald said the cable-access fund is restricted and is supported by subscriber fees; he told the council Urban Media Arts had identified needed equipment replacements and that the fund’s reserve balance was between $300,000 and $400,000 before this appropriation. Councilor O'Malley and other councillors emphasized the importance of MATV for public meeting access and local programming.
The council moved the order (motion by Councilor Ciminelli, seconded by Councilor Taylor) and adopted it by roll call.
The appropriation will be used for replacement equipment to ensure more reliable broadcasts of council meetings and other community programming; city staff said the purchase is part of a strategic capital plan for the studio.
