The Oregon City City Commission on Jan. 7 approved purchase of a library outreach vehicle to support the library’s outreach events and programming.
Commissioners pulled item 7b from the consent agenda for questions about staffing, operating costs and specific line items. A staff representative explained the vehicle is intended as a library outreach vehicle — not a full service “bookmobile” with a fixed route — and that the library plans to operate it using existing staff after training to drive and use the vehicle. “We are not going to have any additional staff,” the staff member said, adding the vehicle will make outreach more efficient and expand reach without adding a new position.
Staff described funding for the purchase as a mix of the library fund, grant awards, foundation contributions and Friends‑of‑the‑Library donations. They said the city set aside funds for vehicle replacement on an 8–10 year schedule and budgeted for fuel and maintenance. A commissioner questioned a $5,700 line item for Wi‑Fi and expressed concern about the overall price; staff replied the vehicle is customized for library use with shelving, modular systems and lift gates and that the city used a competitive interstate purchasing cooperative to evaluate vendors.
Staff outlined planned uses including an early‑literacy celebration for families, school visits, a “digital resource roadshow” to provide technology help in outlying areas and participation in community events such as National Night Out. Commissioners also discussed community input on the vehicle’s exterior wrap and a possible name.
After discussion, a motion to approve item 7b was moved and seconded and the commission voted unanimously to approve the outreach vehicle purchase.
