The Newton Historic Preservation Commission voted unanimously Jan. 5 to approve a proposal to replace three upper-story windows at 417 North Main, commonly known as the Clay Works building.
Staff said the project would install composite one-over-one single-sash windows while keeping existing stone frames and keystones and would not disturb the facade. The commission noted that existing windows formed a "hodgepodge" of varying types and that the proposed replacement is a straightforward, in-kind update that meets guidelines for the district.
A motion to approve the windows passed unanimously; staff also alerted commissioners to a recent building-code change that allows doors (not windows) to swing out onto sidewalks when adequate sidewalk width exists, a change that may affect future downtown facade projects.
