Davie council approves first reading of police pension ordinance changes

Davie’s Town Council voted to approve on first reading an ordinance that amends the Town of Davie Police Pension Plan, advancing changes to Tier 2 benefits and contribution rules.
Councilor Ruiz moved to approve the ordinance after staff read the measure into the record. The ordinance would provide a 65% accrued benefit after 20 years of service for Tier 2 members, permit up to eight years of DROP (deferred retirement option plan) participation for eligible participants, and increase Tier 2 member contributions to 10 percent. A second public hearing is scheduled for Jan. 21.
Councilor Ruiz said he wanted to put on the record thanks to staff and the police chiefs and noted the change had been previously ratified by the union. The motion passed on the council’s vote.
The ordinance language was read aloud at the meeting to explain severability, conflicts and the effective date; council did not receive public comment during the first-reading public hearing. The council’s vote advances the measure to its next hearing for final action.
