The City of Muskegon Planning Commission on Jan. 15 approved a site‑plan review allowing AB Electric (referred to in the transcript as AB Electrical Wires Incorporated) to expand its facility at 2246 Altoff Drive, contingent on two conditions: engineering approval of a stormwater permit and relocating the site’s driveway to align with the driveway at 2291 Altoff Drive.
Planning staff told the commission that AB Electric currently occupies a building the transcript describes as approximately 32,000 square feet and is proposing a substantial addition that the transcript characterizes as ‘‘close to a 40,000 square foot addition.’’ Staff said the company has acquired the adjacent vacant office building, plans to demo it, and has submitted a landscape plan that staff described as satisfactory, including evergreens along Hopeuff Drive. Planning staff recommended approval ‘‘with those 2 conditions,’’ and the applicant indicated it was amenable to moving the driveway to avoid traffic conflicts.
A commissioner raised concerns about pedestrian and transit access, noting two bus stops near the site and a bike trail across the street but no marked crosswalk from the farther stop to the facility. That commissioner asked staff and the applicant to note the need for improved pedestrian connectivity in case employees depend on transit. Planning staff acknowledged the point but treated the crosswalk as a separate city transportation consideration rather than a condition of the site plan.
A motion to approve the site plan with the two conditions was moved and seconded, and the commission conducted a roll‑call vote; multiple commissioners answered "Yes" on the record and the chair declared the motion approved. The stormwater permit must be granted by the engineering department before final approval is issued, and the driveway relocation must be completed to match the neighboring entrance at 2291 Altoff Drive.
Next steps: staff and the applicant discussed logistics after the vote; staff said the applicant should expect follow‑up in the next few days about permit steps and implementation.
