Committee grants short extensions for Angelina Park and Godfrey Triangle projects

The Springfield Community Preservation Committee approved short contract extensions for two parks projects so contractors can complete seasonally constrained work.
Laura Walsh of the city’s parks presentation team explained that Angelina Park in East Springfield has an asphalt path, benches and playground equipment in place, but the poured‑in‑place rubber safety surfacing for new inclusive playground elements cannot be installed in cold temperatures. "We can't open the playground until you have the safety surfacing installed because you wouldn't want anyone to get hurt," Walsh told the committee, and Parks requested an extension of the contract from Dec. 31, 2025, to June 30, 2026, to allow surfacing work in spring weather.
Walsh also described phase 2 work at Godfrey Triangle in Indian Orchard — replacement of a missing bronze eagle on the World War I monument, flagpole lighting (solar options) and irrigation. The irrigation system is installed but could not be tested before seasonal water shutoffs; Parks sought an extension to June 30, 2026, so staff can see the system operational and accept the project.
Both motions to extend the contracts were moved, seconded and approved by the committee. Staff will follow up in the spring to confirm installation of the safety surfacing at Angelina Park and to confirm irrigation and lighting operation at Godfrey Triangle before closing out the projects.
