The Romulus City Council on Monday approved a no-fee permit and temporary road closures for the Martin Luther King Jr. community walk scheduled for Jan. 19, 2026.
Reverend Arthur Willis told the council the event will begin with coffee at 8 a.m. at the middle school, start the walk about 8 a.m., then continue to the high school for a 9:30 a.m. program. "It will be on January 19," Willis said, outlining a route that includes Wick Road eastbound to Wayne Road and a partial closure of Wayne Road from Wick Road south to Ramos High School. Willis said each participating school will have a student speaker rather than a single keynote.
Councilwoman Roscoe moved to approve the no-fee permit and the requested closures; Councilman Jones seconded. The motion passed on a roll call with all members present voting yes.
The clerk and mayor reiterated volunteer needs and logistics: volunteers are asked to help prepare warming packets for people experiencing homelessness at 8 a.m. in the high school cafeteria, and coffee will be available at the middle school. The municipality also listed a backup date (Jan. 24) for inclement weather.
The council’s approval allows organizers to proceed with street closure coordination with the police department and to notify schools and neighbors. The event’s theme this year is "1 Romulus: Living the Dream in Action," with an emphasis on youth participation.
