Kevin Anderson was sworn in as a member of the Maryland House of Delegates during a short ceremony in which he recited the oath to support the Constitution of the United States and to bear true allegiance to the state of Maryland.
The oath administrator led Anderson through the oath, which included promises to support the federal Constitution and the constitution and laws of the state, to perform the duties of delegate diligently and faithfully and not to “receive the profits or any part of the profits of any other office” during his term. No formal roll-call vote was recorded; the ceremony consisted of the administered oath and brief remarks.
An official told Anderson his name already appears on the chamber’s voting list “on the wall there on both sides,” specifying he is listed in the fourth column, fourth name, and asked him to sign in to make his status official for opening day.
In brief remarks after the oath, Anderson called the moment “bittersweet” for him and his family, said he and his wife had worked for Charles Otto and that he knew Otto would want Anderson to “step into his shoes and fill his shoes.” Anderson added, “I will try to do it to the best of my ability,” and said he looked forward to working with colleagues during the coming year.
The swearing-in completed the ceremonial step required for Anderson to take his seat; staff asked him to sign the chamber attendance list so he would be prepared for votes and participation when the session opens.
