Nueces County proclaims Jan. 19, 2026 for MLK march; Delta Sigma Theta outlines weekend of events

The Nueces County Commissioner’s Court voted unanimously to adopt a resolution declaring Jan. 19, 2026, as the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday celebration and commemorative march in Corpus Christi. The court then invited organizers to speak and pose for a photograph.
Nikkila Pradia, president of the Corpus Christi Alumni Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, told the court the chapter will mark the 40th annual march with events across the weekend, beginning with the Corpus Christi Black Chamber of Commerce’s prayer breakfast Saturday at 8 a.m. at St. John Baptist Church and an interfaith service Sunday at 6 p.m. at Brooks Worship Center. Pradia said the YWCA will host a “Bridal Justice Forum” at the courthouse central jury room Monday morning before a noon program that will precede the march to the Church of the Good Shepherd.
"This is an event for everybody," Pradia said, urging residents to participate whether they march or meet organizers at the courthouse or the Church of the Good Shepherd. She thanked county officials for allowing the courthouse as a staging and meeting point and praised Sheriff Hooper for providing security support.
County commissioners praised the foundation of the event and the organizers’ decades-long commitment to community outreach. The court’s proclamation formally endorses the date and encourages citizens to attend; the motion to adopt was moved, seconded and approved by voice vote.
The court had no further action on the item after the proclamation and photo opportunity. Organizers said they will continue to coordinate with county staff and local law enforcement on safety and logistics leading into Jan. 19.
