Tree board finalizes draft work plan; staff to pursue KCD partnership for tree giveaway

The Lake Forest Park Tree Board spent a large part of its meeting reviewing and assigning leads on a draft work plan that will guide activity for the coming year, including outreach, invasive-plant management and a comprehensive review tied to a Sustainable Forest Initiative grant.
Sam Call, the city’s urban forest planner, told members he updated the work plan to identify leads and clarified that some items would be collaborative and evolve over time. “I was able to update from what the notes I took and then just kind of what we talked about adjusting a few of the verbiage,” Call said; members agreed the plan could be adjusted month to month.
Members assigned leads for several items: outreach and communications, invasive plant management, and monitoring the DNR Evergreen Community grant process. The board agreed Victoria Coutel would serve as a principal contact for the grant-related work, with Sam continuing as the city contact for the consultants.
On outreach logistics, the board discussed scheduling a 15-minute presentation to City Council in February to deliver the work plan and annual report and to introduce the board’s priorities. “Either the twelfth or the 26th,” council liaison Larry Goldman said when members discussed possible council dates.
The board also explored working with the King Conservation District (KCD) to run a tree giveaway tied to the Green Fair and Arbor Day. Members emphasized using KCD’s experience rather than reinventing giveaways: one participant noted KCD usually hosts the event pages and acts as lead for partner cities. Sam Call will contact KCD and report back on cost, logistics and potential use of the city’s tree‑fund account.
Board members asked staff to circulate the volunteer handbook, the draft annual report and other materials in advance of the next meeting so new members and incumbents can review assignments and refine the plan.
