Executive Director Jesse told the Johnson County Solid Waste Management District board on Jan. 12 that the facility saw heavy holiday usage and recommended a consistent weekly schedule to meet demand.
"I literally broke it down into hours because sometimes it's hard to understand. But in 38 hours, we saw 705 people," Jesse said, summarizing holiday-period traffic and material volumes. Jesse also noted the facility handled more than 15,000 pounds of cardboard and roughly a ton of e-waste during the tracked period.
To respond to growing Saturday demand, Jesse proposed moving to Tuesday–Friday 8:00 a.m.–4:30 p.m. and every Saturday 8:00 a.m.–1:00 p.m., which staff estimated would average about 39 hours per week and add roughly 14 hours per month. Board members asked about the implementation date; after some confusion, Jesse said the schedule change would start Feb. 1.
Board discussion touched on staffing and the need for another part-time employee if the extra hours continue; staff said they would re-evaluate usage in June or July and consider budget implications at budget time.
What happens next: Jesse will monitor usage under the new schedule and report back with a full-year analysis during the March meeting and again in budget season.
