Council approves three-year Evanston Folk Festival permit through 2028 with neighborhood conditions

The Administration Public Works Committee voted to approve a special event permit covering the Evanston Folk Festival for 2026 through 2028.

Audrey Thompson, the city’s recreation director, told the committee the city is not sponsoring the event and that event planners must provide the funds necessary to execute it. Thompson said the city has worked with event planners and neighbors to address concerns and applies established impact classifications (high, medium, low) when assessing events on the lakefront. She recommended a three-year permit so planners can secure performers and negotiate better terms, while noting the permit can be revisited if concerns arise.

Council members expressed constituents’ concerns about commercialization and lakefront integrity but also acknowledged the festival’s popularity and the benefits of planning multi-year events. Committee members asked for and received assurances that community meetings and mitigation steps have been part of prior festival planning.

A roll-call vote recorded six in favor and none opposed. Staff said they will continue pre- and post-event meetings with neighbors to manage impacts and may add stipulations in future years if needed.
