Ways and Means committee approves multiple county hiring authorizations

County Superintendent of Public Works Thomas Windus requested permission to fill a full-time motor equipment operator (MEO) position and subsequent positions in the Department of Public Works. The estimated salary range was $40,889 to $49,552, with annual benefits estimated at $17,001.61 to $20,007.97. The position was presented as fully county-funded and included in the 2026 budget; the committee approved the request on a voice vote.
District Attorney Peter Degnan requested permission to fill one full-time Assistant District Attorney and one First Assistant District Attorney (and subsequent positions). The assistant position was listed with an estimated salary between $70,000 and $100,000 and benefits between $29,000 and $42,000; the First Assistant position was listed at $71,000 to $102,000 with benefits between $30,000 and $42,000. Both positions were described as 100% county-funded and included in the budget. A committee member asked whether certain appointment questions should be addressed to the County Attorney; the procedural question was noted but did not halt the approvals. Motions to approve were carried on voice votes.
