Utility commission approves Dec. 10 minutes, bids and summer-hire requests

The Wisconsin Rapids Utility Commission approved minutes from an urgent Dec. 10 meeting, accepted competitive bids and approved summer-help hires for the engineering, office and water departments during its session.

Commission leadership opened the meeting by asking for approval of the Dec. 10 urgent meeting minutes; Unidentified Speaker 2 moved and Unidentified Speaker 3 seconded, and the motion carried on a voice vote ('Aye'). The commission then confirmed previously published appendices and approved the bids brought forward.

Staff introduced an action item seeking summer-help authorization for the engineering department to assist with drawing conversions and related as-built work. Commissioners discussed whether a short trial or a longer consecutive period was preferable; after debate, a motion setting a maximum of 12 weeks for summer hires was moved by Unidentified Speaker 1, seconded by Unidentified Speaker 6, and carried.

The commission also moved to fill an office position with the candidate who served last year; Unidentified Speaker 7 said the returning employee would reduce training needs, and the motion to hire was approved. Separately, the water department’s summer-help request — described by staff as landscape, well and tower maintenance and assistance with trouble-truck inspections — was moved, seconded and approved.
