Washington County supervisors approve permits, playground funding and homestead corrections, reappoint county appointees

The Washington County Board of Supervisors moved forward on a package of routine but consequential items at its year-end meeting, approving utility and occupancy permits, event alcohol permits, playground procurement and installation funding, multiple homestead-exemption reinstatements and a post-executive-session unanimous reappointment of county appointees.
Permits and events: The board approved two right-of-way/secondary electrical-service permits for Murrow Road and Hollandsworth Road after staff presentations. It approved two alcohol-serving permits for holidays at county facilities: one requested by Sonia Tims for the Washington County Convention Center (Dec. 17, 2025, and April 12, 2026) and a separate request for the Washington County Multiplex on Dec. 20, 2025. One supervisor registered a "nay" during the Convention Center vote, but the motion carried.
Youth and fee waivers: The board also approved waiving fees for a juvenile-court group session at the Washington Convention Center scheduled for Dec. 18–20.
Parks and playgrounds: A Leland park project using previously allocated "Opera dollars" received approval to move forward to procurement. Two contractor quotes were presented ($34,004 and $45,740) for playground equipment, benches and picnic tables; installation was discussed separately and estimated at about $3,500. The board approved moving forward with procurement and later approved a $12,346 installation timeline with an expected spring installation window (6–8 weeks lead time).
Tax office corrections: The tax office presented several corrections and reinstatement requests for 2025 homestead exemptions (including requests for Miss Danley, William Owings and Shirley Bell), a correction for a demolished building to be taxed as a vacant lot, and an equipment relocation adjustment for a local business. The board moved and approved all the listed corrections by voice vote.
Executive session and follow-up: The board convened in executive session for personnel matters and later announced in open session that it had unanimously reappointed all county appointees. The board also noted use of an MDOT grant and other resources to support litter pickup efforts.
Why it matters: Routine votes on permits, capital projects and tax corrections shape local services, recreation access and tax bills. Reappointments and grant-driven litter-pickup work affect county operations early next year.
Next steps: Staff were asked to return with installation specifics and paperwork for event permits and to prepare a county policy governing rentals of county assets.
