CDHS committee refers $400,000 Tree Trust Fund donation for senior hazardous-tree assistance to FEC

The Community Development and Human Services Committee on Jan. 16 referred a resolution that would allow the city to donate up to $400,000 from the Tree Trust Fund to the Georgia Arborist Association for a hazardous-tree assistance program aimed at low-income senior homeowners. The referral to the Finance, Executive & Administration Committee (FEC) passed unanimously, 5–0.
Andrew Walter of the Department of City Planning told the committee the resolution is “a follow-up to the ordinance that was passed last summer authorizing a donation of $400,000 to a nonprofit to implement a program to assist low income seniors remove hazardous trees.” He said the program would cover removal or limb-up of hazardous trees and include one-for-one replanting to restore canopy.
The resolution cites section 6-306 of the City of Atlanta Charter as authority for the donation and would authorize the mayor or his designee to execute a donation agreement and the chief financial officer to make the transfer from the Tree Trust Fund account listed in the communication. Chair Matt Westmoreland moved to refer the item to FEC and Councilmember Dozier seconded; the motion carried 5–0.
Committee materials indicate the action responds to repeated community requests for help with hazardous trees that property owners cannot afford to remove. The referral means FEC will review the donation agreement and financial details before any funds are transferred.
