MPO authorizes letter of support for Yarmouth Route 28 BUILD grant application

The Cape Cod MPO authorized staff to prepare a letter of support for a BUILD (Better Utilizing Investments to Leverage Development) discretionary grant application from the Town of Yarmouth to advance improvements on Route 28 in the Route 28/North Main corridor.
Colleen Maderos told the board the project is already on the regional TIP with $21 million currently programmed, but the most recent cost estimate is about $65 million. The Town of Yarmouth is the applicant; project partners include the Town of Barnstable and the Cape Cod Regional Transit Authority to strengthen the application. The BUILD program awards grants from $1 million up to $25 million nationally; the MPO said it would seek the maximum $25 million but would accept a lesser award depending on competition.
Maderos also said the project lies within an Area of Persistent Poverty (APP) and historically disadvantaged communities (HDC) so a match may not be required. MassDOT has offered coordination and potential match support where appropriate.
The MPO moved, seconded and by roll call authorized staff to draft a letter of support for the application, with staff to return a draft for signature by the MPO chair following the process used in a prior application.
