Mayor highlights employee awards, community market and new mental health center

Mayor Ron Anders opened the meeting and used the Mayor's Minutes to recognize city employees and community initiatives. He introduced Aziza Hurt as the employee of the month, citing a memorandum from Brandy Ezell that noted Hurt's traffic signal technician certification and her traffic signal inspector certification earned proactively though not required for her role.

The mayor listed multiple service anniversaries and retirements across departments, naming employees with five-year, 15-year, 20-year and 25-year tenures and thanking them for their service. "Thank you, Aziza, for being a great example to all of us in the city of Auburn of how to serve our citizens," Mayor Ron Anders said.

Under city manager communications, the minutes record one open seat on the cemetery advisory board; the position begins immediately and runs through Dec. 31, 2030, and the council plans to consider applications and make that appointment at the next meeting on Jan. 20. The mayor also thanked community partners and neighboring Opelika for the opening of a community market in partnership with the Food Bank of East Alabama, describing it as a local resource to help residents who need assistance purchasing food.

The mayor noted the recent opening of a new mental health center supported by the city and partner organizations, calling it "an honorable place for people to get the help that they need."
