Resident warns Main Street work is removing trees and narrowing walkways

John Nicholson (413 North Granbury Avenue) told the Beachside Redevelopment Board on Jan. 14 that recent work from ISB to Seabreeze has removed trees across about five blocks and left signage and electrical installations that shrink the pedestrian corridor.
"The idea that we have 5 city blocks that will not have any trees on it will only have signs," Nicholson said, and added that the placement of electrical work in walkways has reduced available pedestrian width, undoing prior sidewalk widenings.
Nicholson urged the board to seek greater visibility into these projects, noting that historically such street work was brought to the redevelopment board for review. He voiced concern that tropical landscaping and tourism‑oriented plantings are being replaced with seasonal or out‑of‑place elements, and asked the board to pay attention when similar projects are proposed.
Board members acknowledged the concern and noted constraints such as placement near signage and crosswalks that may limit plant height; they suggested lower, low‑maintenance plantings where taller palms are not feasible. Staff encouraged use of SeeClickFix and existing community groups for reporting issues and confirmed that Public Works and Communications handle streetscape planning and notification.
The board did not take formal action on the complaint at this meeting.
