Waste Management commits to expanded litter pickup near Will County landfill
Summary
County staff reported Waste Management has agreed to remove litter every two weeks on about 10 additional miles of county roadway near the landfill, increasing the area covered roughly fivefold from prior efforts.
County staff reported to the Landfill Committee that Waste Management has committed to a more frequent and expanded roadside litter pickup schedule around the landfill site.
"They've committed to cleaning up or removing litter on a every 2 week basis on about another 10 miles of roadway," staff said, describing new coverage extending from the Midewin Welcome Center south to New River Road and along North River Road to Old Chicago Road. Staff said they observed crews in the field this week and will continue weekly checks; either staff or a designated planner will ask Waste Management to increase frequency if necessary.
Committee members asked about enforcement and truck tarping. Staff said state law requires trucks to be covered on arrival to the landfill and that the host agreement requires vehicles to be clean before leaving; noncompliant haulers can be fined under litter laws and the county has raised concerns with Waste Management to improve compliance.
No formal action was taken; staff will continue to monitor compliance and report back if the county needs to escalate enforcement.
