At a Jan. 13 meeting, the Rockingham County school board reviewed two proposed academic calendars and received a superintendent’s report highlighting CTE outcomes and student health expansions.
Staff outlined two calendar options: Option 1 would be an unbalanced calendar (80 days fall, 88 days spring) with high school exams completed before the winter break; Option 2 would be more traditional and balanced (84/84 days) with exams after the holiday. Staff reminded the board that the district must follow state calendar law (schools must begin the Monday closest to Aug. 26 and end the Friday closest to June 11) and proposed a two‑week public comment period with a webinar for staff before a Feb. 9 final reading. Board members asked staff to add grade‑level identification to the public survey to better capture educator and parent viewpoints, and discussed tradeoffs including staff development opportunities and EOC testing windows.
In his superintendent’s report, Dr. Stover highlighted several district items: the district welcomed new PIO/safety director Eric Gutekunz, reported a brief Internet outage at Reidsville High School during the first day of high‑school exams that was resolved within 30 minutes, and previewed CTE and student health programs. He reported that 82 percent of students in CTE courses this semester earned certifications or credentials aligned to state standards — a record high for the district — and staff said they will provide the underlying student counts and credential totals on request. The district also is expanding school‑based health clinics in partnership with UNC Health and other providers and is piloting mental health teletherapy at Moss Street for elementary students.
Board members asked for follow‑up data: the percent of the high‑school population enrolled in CTE classes, breakdown of CCP enrollment, and guidance staffing impacts associated with increased CCP/CTE participation. Staff agreed to provide the requested breakdowns by follow‑up email and at future work sessions.
The board also recognized Reidsville High School’s football championship and student volunteer service. A motion to approve the consent agenda carried and the meeting later moved into closed session for personnel matters.
