Madison County Justice Court to switch to Graphite Payments; clerk reports more than $2 million collected last year

Sheila Taylor, Madison County Justice Court clerk, asked the board Nov. 17 to approve a proposed agreement to switch the court’s credit‑card processing to Graphite Payments, which the clerk said will charge about 2.95% across both in‑court and online transactions compared with prior arrangements that were as high as 6% online.
Taylor said Graphite will provide credit‑card readers and handle implementation with county IT; she proposed a tentative start date of Dec. 1, pending final agreement.
Taylor also presented fiscal‑year statistics for Oct. 1, 2024–Sept. 30, 2025: approximately $1,300,000 settled to the county from justice court activity; approximately 14,837 cases processed including 343 felony cases, 1,281 criminal cases, about 7,000 traffic citations and 6,000 civil cases. Civil collections exceeded $800,000; criminal collections exceeded $1,200,000. The court has collected over $2,000,000 total and has used debt setoff and show‑cause letters to pursue outstanding balances.
The board approved the processor change by motion and voice vote.
