Fox Lane residents ask county to convert private lane to public road; board forms review committee

Veronica Peppers, a resident of 390 Catlett Road in District 2, told the Madison County Board of Supervisors on Dec. 1 that Fox Lane—a privately maintained, quarter-mile dead-end serving about six homes—now carries heavier traffic as nearby development increases and that dust, potholes and rutting have worsened living conditions and emergency access.
Peppers said neighbors submitted a petition asking that the county convert Fox Lane to a public road so the county will assume maintenance, paving and emergency access responsibilities. "Converting Fox Lane to a public road for future pavement will ensure the consistent maintenance, payment improvements for safer conditions for all who reside on that road," she said, and offered to meet any county conditions or documentation required for the conversion process.
Board members discussed a site inspection and agreed to appoint a two-supervisor review (one in the area and one not) to evaluate conditions and make a recommendation. Supervisors Brandon and Banks were named to the review committee and will report back to the board.
County staff advised that the formal process for converting a private road typically involves field review, documentation of conditions and a recommendation to the board if public acceptance is appropriate. No final decision to accept the road was made on Dec. 1; the board’s motion created the review committee.
